Overview
Balfron Tower was designed in the 1960s by the modernist architect Ernő Goldfinger, and is an iconic, brutalist residential tower block. Telford Living collaborated with Studio Egret West and Ab Rogers Design to comprehensively and sensitively restore this Grade II* listed residential landmark, comprising 146 apartments, extensive residential community space and underground car parking.
Situated amid a network of canals, estuaries and docks, Poplar is a desirable central London location for commuters and families alike. The site is a 9-minute walk from the nearest DLR train station, with good connectivity into Canary Wharf and other prominent district centre locations.
In a joint venture with award-winning Housing Association Poplar HARCA, Telford Living delivered the refurbishment works in early 2023. Seeing the unmet demand of the build-to-rent market, in 2024 the JV converted the asset from open market sales to market rentals and simultaneously partnered with a best-in-class operator to transition the asset.
This heritage-led regeneration brings positive socio-economic and environmental benefits to its neighbourhood, promotes wellbeing for residents and reduces localised noise and air pollution. Crucially, Balfron Tower is now also making a valuable contribution to the CE principles whilst securing the long-term viable future of this heritage asset. As with most refurbishments, the benefits in reduced embodied carbon emissions are significant when compared to knock down and rebuild projects.
